I have owned a Tsurugi shell (prior version of this) for 3 seasons as my main backcountry shell (St. Elias for the resort) and was looking to replace it as it's getting a little long in the tooth. I ordered the new anorak in M and L with plans to return one. I ended up returning both and will stick with my Tsurugi for now.
The good: I appreciate the pass sleeve in the left arm and the new cell phone pocket in the main anorak pocket. The hood is definitely larger and now comfortably fits over my helmet while the Tsurugi's hood was a bit tight. The hood adjusment mechanism is a definite improvement over the Tsurugi.
Neutral: the fit is a tiny touch larger than the old Tsurugi, which was always a little big on me (size L, 5'11" 195 lbs 42in chest). I could fit in both a M and L in the new anorak with the L being needed if I planned more than a baselayer and thin midlayer under it.
The not-so-good: two main issues. First is the material on the new anorak seems to be the exact same as on the St. Elias jacket. The old Tsurugi had a thinner tasma material which saved weight, pack size, and improved breathability over my old St. Elias jacket (which I replaced with the new one this year and have really enjoyed). With the thicker material the new Tasma is definitely more of an all rounder instead of a more backcountry specific piece, which is great if that's what you're looking for but not for me. I also felt the anorak pouch pocket was smaller on the new anorak than the Tsurugi as I had trouble getting my skins into the new jacket pocket while they fit comfortably in my Tsurugi.
Fit and finish is impeccable as always. Hopefully you all either do a revision on the anorak next year to bring it back more in line with the Tsurugi or release a backcountry specific shell!
